The Fairbanks Borough Assembly voted unanimously at last Thursday’s meeting to accept a donation of land that will nearly double the size of the Isberg Recreation Area. Thank you to all who commented!
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner had a STORY on the Assembly meeting.
From the story:
Daniel Welch, the borough’s natural resources development manager, said the area will continue to be managed as a passive park with no additional staffing, resources or capital costs. Management will be shared with the land trust.
The move had a lot of support, though the story does quote a nearby resident who is concerned that it will bring more use, especially motorized use, to the area.
She recommended more robust education and signage going forward, especially for those users who are new to the borough.
The land donation is from the Interior Alaska Land Trust, which has helped preserve land and trails for recreation and green space in several areas across the borough. If you like the work they are doing, please become a member and/or donate to the group. Find out more about the group HERE.
