Internet phisherman have come up with another sneaky way to get you to give up your information.
This one came up as part of my volunteer work with the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks. One of the NSCF staff got an email that looked like it came from the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage (NSAA), a group with which we have regular interactions.
What makes this one tricky, is the return email address appears legit. The email we got was from “info.ak (at) anchoragenordicski.com” while the real address is “info (at) anchoragenordicski.com”. The email contains a graphic (below in two parts) which said the email recipient had received some files that needed to be download. This is plausible, since the NSAA deals with distribution of the Alaska Nordic Skier.
The email recipient was suspicious. She didn’t open it and instead forwarded it to a couple of us, asking our opinion. I looked up the real contact info for the NSAA on their website and forwarded the email to them. They confirmed it was not from them.
The NSCF got another tricky phishing attempt earlier. I did a post about it HERE.
Be ever cautious about emails (and texts and other things) you get. Especially if you’re not expecting something, but even if you are.
