I wanted to warn everyone about a sophisticated email phishing attempt that was tried on me recently.
I do volunteer work for the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks. The email was sent to two of the email addresses I use with the club. The From: line had the club president’s name spelled correctly. The email also included the name of the club treasurer, though didn’t identify her as such. It was “signed” by the club president and below that had the correct email address for the NSCF president.
I didn’t fall for it, though it did have me going for a couple of seconds. The key giveaway was in the From: line. The email address didn’t belong to the club, and I didn’t recognize it from anywhere else. Except for that, everything else looks legit (though I was suspicious that the treasurer didn’t know how to use any of the payment platforms mentioned). If I had just hit reply, the email would have gone to the lewis.maskrey email address.
All the information on the email is easily obtained from the club’s website. So, I wanted to warn folks, since others could get the same or similar emails.
Below I’ve pasted the email with names and email addresses altered (except for the lewis.maskrey email address, which was the one that came with the email).
Be careful. Practice safe e-mailing.

Eric,
I hope you’re doing well! I wanted to check if you know how to use Zelle, PayPal, or Venmo. We still have a pending expense to pay a vendor, but Susan James isn’t familiar with using those platforms.
If you know how to use either of them and you can handle the payment from your account, please reply to this email to confirm. I’ll promptly send you the payment details and ensure you’re reimbursed immediately.
Thank you so much for your help!
Regards,
Bob Glichner
