The Fairbanks Borough Comprehensive Roads Plan process is nearing completion. The final version of the plan is out for public comment.
The plan has relevance to everyone who uses the roads — including cyclists, runners, walkers, etc. It also has relevance to trail users, though the recently passed Trails Plan update protects many trails (see below).
Some caveats are always needed with a large, complicated public process like this. In this instance be aware that the plan does NOT:
- Mean the government will be building these roads.
- Allow the government to come take land.
- Force roads through private property.
- Promote the sale of land.
This is just a plan for where roads should go IF land is subdivided. And alterations from the plan are possible, if necessary and justified.
Roads Plan and Trails
The developers of the plan have worked closely with other departments of the borough, including the borough Trails Office. In many places, future roads in the plan share space with already existing trails. Most of those trails are in the Boro Trails Plan, updated in 2023. If that’s the case, then the trail will be protected if the land is subdivided and a road is built. The trail might have to be moved, but the Trails Plan requires that trail continue to exist.
However, if the trail is NOT on the Trails Plan, then it does not have that protection. If you are not sure if a trail has been included in the Trails Plan, check out the plan and its maps HERE.
Trails can be added to the plan at any time. See the process HERE.
